OMG its 2010!

Last year, I called 2008 my biggest year (imagine my five-month stay in Okinawa, Japan). But guess what? Years only get bigger. Which makes me regard 2010 as equally interesting one.

These were the things that happened in 2009 (there were more but I will just shorten the entries in my list):

* Attended an International Conference for SOLD, March 27-30, 2009, Baybay, Leyte, Philippines.
* Been a member of the Information, Communication, and Documentation Committee of the 2009 Palarong Pambansa held at Tacloban, Leyte from April 22-May 1, 2009.
* I've been to different parts of the country to attend IMCS workshops.
* Acted as OIC of the ETD unit from August 25-28, 2009.
* Acted as Public Desk Officer last October 13 & December 11, 2009 at OSEC.
* Evaluated USAID donated TXs/SMs last November 11, 2009
* Moved out from my in-law's house.
* Competed in different chess tournaments in the country.
* Got comfortably fit. Did some biking and exercises. Still doing it
* Live on our own.
* Finally learned how to cook

Maybe you're asking me what 2010 holds, I really don't know. But I’m looking forward to it.

Efficiency vs. Effectiveness

Efficiency or effectiveness is thing my two friends have been arguing for these past years. "Come on, do it efficiently" yelled one of my friend. "What is the point of doing it efficiently if you are not doing it effectively?" is a common echoing back from one of my other friend.

The Concise English Dictionary defines the word "Efficiently" as having achieved results without waste of time or effort. It gives the word for "Effectively" as having accomplished a specified right result.


Well, which is more important in term of working and accomplishing a task? Should we do it efficiently as my first friend (A) suggests or do it effectively as my other friend (B) insists?

Let us presume that (A) has an assignment to organize a company year end tour to the Great Rock. He did it very efficiently. It took him only one week to prepare all necessary work from booking the tour coach, snacks for the trip, entertainments, songs, accommodation, etc. This could actually take other person a full month work to accomplish the same task. When the big day came, everyone was so excited and got up early for the tour. After a few hours ride, they eventually arrived at the Grand Rock. Every one was quite exhausted now but there were no accommodation. They came to a wrong place.

Now, let us look at my other friend. It took him more than a month to prepare for the same year end company tour. During the process, he made so many mistakes that the tour was almost at the verge of being called off. Anyhow, here came the same big day, and less than half of the employees turned up for the trip. All arrived safely at the Great Rock after a few hours ride.

Efficiently vs. effectively, which is more important in term of accomplishing a job? May be we have started with a wrong question. We should not compare efficiently and invectively in term of importance. Their relationship is more of a priority than quality. Effectiveness is more of a goal setting and efficiency is more of a process of attaining the goal.

7 Long Days at RELC-Marikina

Ew. I was assigned to assist our clientele at RELC-Marikina from December 15 to 22. I am so lucky for I can read more stories and other materials.

The Next Emperor

A great emperor in the Far East was growing old and knew, it was time to choose his successor. Instead of appointing one of his children or assistants, he decided something different. One day,
he summoned all the young people in the kingdom together. He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one among you." The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued. "I am going to give each one of you a seed today. One very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"

One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully. Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown.

After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant, and he felt like a failure. Six months went by--still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. However, Ling didn't say anything to his friends. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow.

A year finally went by, and all the youth of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But honest about what happened, Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the others. They were beautiful--in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kids laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, "Hey, nice try."

When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide himself in the back. "My, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. Today, one of you will be appointed the next emperor!"

All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the guards to bring him upfront. Ling was terrified thinking "The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!" When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked for his name. "My name is Ling," he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor ordered everyone to quiet down. He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!"

Ling couldn't believe it. Ling could not even grow his seed. How could he be the new emperor?

Then the emperor said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds which would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he
will be the new emperor!"

Moral of the story:
If you plant honesty, You will reap trust
If you plant goodness, You will reap friends
If you plant humility, You will reap greatness
If you plant perseverance, You will reap victory
If you plant consideration, You will reap harmony
If you plant hard work, You will reap success
If you plant forgiveness, You will reap reconciliation
If you plant openness, You will reap intimacy
If you plant patience, You will reap improvements
If you plant faith, You will reap miracles
But
If you plant dishonesty, You will reap distrust.
If you plant selfishness, You will reap loneliness
If you plant pride, You will reap destruction
If you plant envy, You will reap trouble
If you plant laziness, You will reap stagnation.
If you plant bitterness, You will reap isolation
If you plant greed, You will reap loss
If you plant gossip, You will reap enemies
If you plant worries, You will reap wrinkles
If you plant sin, You will reap guilt

So be careful what you plant now, it will determine what you will reap tomorrow. The seeds you scatter now will either make your life worse or better or those of the ones who will come after you. Yes, someday, you will enjoy the fruits or you will pay for the seeds you plant or the choices you make.... today.

Fake 100-Peso Bill from a Bank

Guys, I need your expert opinion here. Our company staff had just paid a BIR transaction in one of the banks here at Pasig City. The bad thing was one of the bills was declared fake by the bank. Later, I learned from my colleague that the money came from the bank itself and was part of the P10,000.00 bill the bank issued. Upon asking one of the bank's personnel she said that it was not their responsibility once the bills were out of the bank's premises. Hmnnn...is it true?

Will the adage "let the buyer beware" be used or the banking institution which issued the money be held liable here?

Chess Team Tournament

I joined the 2009 NCFP Chess Tournament yesterday and today at the LWUA located at Balara, Quezon City. The tournament was participated by 39 accredited teams of the NCFP. I represented DepEd Team A and our team got 5 pts. and we were in the lower half of the standing. I am so happy to experience fighting the elite players consisting of Philippines best GMs, IMs, and NMs. Mabuhay National Chess Federation of the Philippines!

On Our Own at Last!

I found our new apartment at Sta. Cruz, Manila and it rocks! Yeah. Not only that it was near to SM San Lazaro where my kids used to stay during the warm afternoon but it was also adjacent to ALPS bus terminal were my sister was in the habit of sending some valuables from Oriental Mindoro. My schedule changed since I do not wake up as early as 3:30 a.m. just what I did in Navotas.

Found a New Apartment

Finally, after 5 years(?) of living with my parents in-law we will have the courage to transfer to our new apartment at Kalimbas, Manila, Philippines. I (with my wife) have been searching for a better place to live since my daughter Helena wakes up at 3:00 a.m. just to go to school. So we will finally leave Navotas and will look for better or should I say greener pasture there.

BTW, I found the new place quiet and serene. It's near to Helena's school too so I wouldn't wake up at 3:30 a.m. just to accompany her to the school.

Chess Invitations

I got invitations to play in a chess team tournament from two teams. I'm having a hard time to choose. Hopefully it would be settled right away.

By the way I would like to congratulate Super GM Wesley So for beating the mighty Super GM Vassily Ivanchuk during their Round 2 chess encounter in the World Cup.

There are too many heroes in the Philippines today. Congrats.

National Anthem Wrongfully Sang

I am attending a workshop at RELC-NCR Marikina and doing my usual morning routine when I overhead the singing of the national anthem from a nearby secondary school. Mind you, the singing is led by one male student who misses three lines of the song. Everybody is shouting and laughing. Moral of the story: learn the lyrics of the song and be confident in singing.

Pacquiao Annihilates Cotto

How nice to see my countryman Manny Pacquiao annihilating (sorry for the word) the equally talented Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. I am so nervous during the first round as both players exchange hard punches. Every time Manny gets hit I felt the pain inside me. As the game progresses the excitement continuously grow. Come Round 3 and a wicked right cross (is that really a right cross?) from Pacquiao decked Cotto to the canvas.

I jumped. No. Everybody watching jumped as we exchanged high fives at the RELC-NCR in Marikina. Wow. Manny's punch was indeed extraordinary.

The game ended with a TKO during the final round. As Manny gave a 3-punch combo Bayless immediately stopped the fight probably to protect Cotto from further injuries.

Congrats Manny! You made us Filipinos great again.

Helena's Birthday

We celebrated the birthday of my daughter Helena Beatrice at Chef d' Angelo at SM San Lazaro. What made the day interesting was that we ate for free. It was Helena's prize during the costume party days ago at the same mall. Whattaday!

Fun After Weeks of Work

After series of sleepless nights our group from SoftDev't KCTC, once again reunited at Pizza Hut @ Robinsons Galleria to enjoy the evening we rightfully deserve.

Halloween Show at SM San Lazaro

I went to SM Manila to witness the 2009 Halloween Costume Party, it so happened that my two kids were also participants. I enjoyed the party of course. BTW here are the pictures...

My Computer Crashed

I was about to finish my database when suddenly my computer crashed. Whew... I have been working on my database for weeks now and all my efforts went to naught.

Unanswered Prayer...

Two days after I got a "your wish is granted" comment from my parish priest, here I am too lonely to hear the "declined remarks" to join the Japanese Scholarship from my superiors. I felt so low. I thought I was a little form surrounded by the head and foot of a parenthesis.

Prophecy

My lofty ambition was really intensified by the remarks I've got from the following: 1)a friend from Caloocan, told me that he could still foresee another scholarship for me; 2) my daughter Helena always include me on her prayers and have been seeing how many toys she could have once I'm there; and then my parish priest told me two days ago that my wish will be granted (I requested for the scholarship). None of these happened, err... maybe in the future, who knows?

Conflict

I prepared for this chance to compete with the best in the bureaucracy and it's a gauge on how far I could go. But I was literally shot before I could start.

Strange Feeling

Perhaps the happiest person now should she receive this information would be my wife. She really dislikes me to leave.

Home Anew!

I went to my hometown yesterday, in haste, to see once again the festive celebration at Barcenaga, Oriental Mindoro. I immediately ordered my wife and kids to go to the JAM bus station for a long drive to Batangas Pier. We missed the 12:00 midnight Ro-Ro ride though due to slow driving mode of the bus driver, instead we catched the 2:00 a.m. ride. Every one felt haggard and wasted because of the long trip.

It's been a long time since I last set foot at our island. I couldn't barely notice the young people I confronted with. The youngsters were very tall I supposed. I came here for two reasons: first, to attend our town fiesta and second, to seek for spiritual blessing from my parish priest regarding my quest for scholarship. I been a fan of spiritual blessing since I got it from a priest at Baybay, Leyte. There was an international conference that time and I was about to take the examination for teachers. The blessing was very effective since I passed the examination now I'm hoping that this request would still be an effective one. I hope that my superiors would let me join and compete in the Japanese scholarship.

As usual, the fiesta celebration had been attended by various people from different places and the extravagant and lavish food were visible all over households. When I was younger I remembered that during fiestas there where shed of blood that arised because of drunkness, well this one is not different. It just came to my knowledge that series of fights happened near our place and one of the victims was at ICU.

Speaking of my visit, I ate several sets of food prepared by my sisters and enjoyed my experienced here. My ageing mother is still on her good mood and what touched me most was when I overheard her saying, "I am happy because everyone comes but what would make me sad is when all of you leave." Whew...

I played chess with my colleagues from the Calapan Chess Club and visited "peryahan" and "tianggehan".

I offered a mass (8:00 a.m.) delivered by the provincial bishop. I have been searching for him for guidance but instead saw my town priest.

Tomorrow we would leave for Manila after enjoying two-day stay.

Family Prayer

I was really stunned to hear the prayer request of my daughter Helena yesterday. Know what? She petitioned for the approval of my scholarship to Japan, new house, etc. For her age I really couldn't believe she would say that.

Words of Encouragement

I received a text from someone regarding my application for scholarship in Japan. Her help was kind of moving me to another level. Imagine, I don't even know her yet she gave me some tips and encouragement.

Though I knew my success is no longer in my hands am so happy to receive such gesture.

Grand Prix Executive Chess

I participated in the 2009 Grand Prix Executive Chess at the Department of Agrarian Reform for the month of October and sad to note that I was totally outclassed by my opponents. It seemed that my line for King's Indian (Saemich Variation) was outdated as I was beaten blue on the opening stage of my Game 1. Game 2 was a drawn game but I pushed harder to win then ended up losing. I won both Games 3 & 4 and I was so happy to show the real me by providing by-the-book moves. Unfortunately, Game 5 was so frustrating. I used Caro Kann but my opponent knew this variation better. I ended up going home empty-handed but full of lessons learned due to experience.

I Will Persist Until I Succeed (by Og Mandino)

I was not delivered unto this World in defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I will hear not those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny.

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal. Wishful Thinking...

Barely three days to go and my application for JICE scholarship will be forfeited. I have been waiting, longing, and praying that my request for a nomination from my Director be granted. Time was against me. Two weeks were wasted by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng now I have nothing to blame but my self. How I wished I prepared my papers long time ago. How I wish I talked to my superiors before. How...

Letter to a Friend

I have been consistently writing a letter to my friend for almost 4 years now and I haven't got a response. It seems that I was forgotten. Yesterday I sent her my last mail.

Missing Japan

I been missing Japan. I hope I could still study there.

New Computer Course for Me

Whew!

I stopped, one day, at the Strata Building near Ortigas and watched the courses offered for IT enthusiasts. I noted that it was free once you passed the examination they would give. I looked at my watch to see if there was still time left for me to take the test. It was 5 p.m. I immediately went to the 18th floor and talked to the one in-charge of Software Development class. She asked some personal information and hastily gave an oral examination. I won't discussed it here so that others wouldn't know the answers. It was about logic dude! Maybe I don't have it that time hahaha. To make the long story short, I was given a chance to be included in the shortlist of wannabe students.

The subjects that were given include: "Java, HTML, Dreamweaver, MySQL, etc. I have had knowledge on HTML and Dreamweaver because I studied it in one of my trainings in Japan but I don't have idea with the rest of the subjects. So I felt very excited to know more programming languages. As the course progressed the degree of difficulty have continuously bothered me. Hmmmp... Why didn't I learn these stuffs when I was younger.

Whattaday!

I had the chance to witness the wonderful activities this morning. However, I wasn't able to participate actively due to various assignments at the office. The employees at DepEd have had their talents and skills exerted during the event. I'm so happy to be able to have a photo opportunity with the future Senator of the Philippines, DepEd Secretary, Jesli A. Lapus.

Dismal Performance on My Chess Tournament Competitions

After a long layoff on over the board (OTB) chess competition I found this signage at Hulong Duhat Court in Malabon that says "There will be a chess tournament on August 30, 2009." So I immediately joined the competition without preparation (again). The good thing about this tournament was that my twin brother (who's in Makati for a training) joined me. You must know how it felt to play with someone who's giving some motivation. I was also appeased with the support I got from my wife and kids who stayed in the tournament hall to give me some energy and needs.

The first challenge was the simultaneous event that fitted IM Barlow Nadera against 22 players. I joined that event. I had a good position and had been thinking that I could at least salvage a draw. But I missed strong lines after I succumb to follow his fast moves (I suffered that sad fate also in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur when I found out that my opponent [Basilio Pandan] had 1 minute left on his time clock. A lesson I didn't learn, err...

The next challenge was the tournament. My first game ended in a draw, though I could have won it, rustiness took its toll against me. I felt my old form during the 2nd and 3rd games, I demolished my opponents convincingly. It was unfortunate to lose a drawish position on my 4th game, I'm so sad to experience that (but I felt the joy in losing, that I always wanted to come back and win). I won the 5th game in a controversial manner. I was about to move when a sudden push at my back got me conscious. I didn't know that my opponent left his Queen en prise, so I immediately took it and my opponent hastily resigned after saying words that I got help from my colleague. But the truth, I was just galloping for moves and my first choice was the rook move and not the Queen takes. Games 6 and 7 ended in fighting draws. Though in game 6 I could have won had not I hesitated to dare in making a very simple but effective move. Game 7 was a very difficult game, at stake on this game was the "Top Navotas Player" award. My opponent kept seeing good move after good move. We were down to the last 1 1/2 minutes of time control and I spotted a drawing chances and I grabbed it. What a relief! A very nice feeling, really. Though, I missed the award I obtained a personal victory of not stumbling during tough games.

My score was a modest 4.5/7 on 2 wins, 3 draws, and a solitary loss.

Travel to Iloilo City

Had my trip to Iloilo City and stayed there for 3 long days. I worked with my colleagues from DepEd and had a great time dealing with teachers, principals, and supervisors. Our group was tasked to search for potential textbook evaluators on MSEP, EPP, TLE, Filipino, and Values Education subjects.

I returned to Manila at about 4:30 this afternoon and after taking my things at the baggage carousel I immediately went out of the NAIA Airport only to be stalled by long lines at the gate. So, I fall in line using the first queue but this certain group (with some tools) from the 2nd line encroached on our path so I told myself "why the guard inspected their baggage(s) first" which one of them overheard. So a little confrontation ensued and of course I stood firm and told this guy who confronted me that they came from the 2nd line, etc. Hmnn...I wasted my 10 precious minutes there.

Travel to DepEd RELC-San Fernando, La Union

I had a worthy experiences at San Fernando City. I met so many interesting people. La Union was a very important place for me. I will not forget that special incident some years ago. The people at DepEd regional office had been very helpful in transmitting some important documents to JICA Office that helped me in getting an international scholarship.

This week's visit wasn't different I really felt that I have never been away from home and I enjoyed every minute of my stay here.

DVD Marathon

I don't have office work today so I watched various DVD tapes. I almost had an eyesore. I watched the following movies: Mr. Bean series, The Grinch, and Diamonds are Forever (James Bond)

Stranded in Navotas

It was 4:30 a.m. when I heard Sec. Jesli Lapus announced on a radio station that there will be no classes for pre-school and elementary pupils today. That means I won't accompany my daughter to her school. I immediately rushed to do my usual morning routine before going to my place of work. Conspicuous was the high water level in the streets before I rode a tricycle. After reaching Hulong Duhat, I transferred to a jeepney only to be stalled to a nearby street due to flash flood. I alighted the vehicle and went back home the hard way (walking through deep water).

I again took a bath and after that made a short nap. After gaining some strength I opened my PC and played some chess games online then I searched for some DVD tapes and watched movies like "Sinjuku Incident," "Bente," and "Fast and the Furious 4."

Sad Fate

Whew...

I just came from witnessing the funeral of my new born niece Ayessa at Ibaan, Batangas. I felt the pain being experienced by my twin brother Noel and his wife Amor. During the first wake, tears were unassumingly longer than usual, sadness were all over the place, and everybody felt wasted. It was good that during the next day everyone recovered on time.

English Language Review

I spent the last four days of the week reviewing IELTS with my favorite mentors at Quezon City. I learned a lot from this semi-workshop and mind you our mentors were so generous for providing us with kits and food as well. Our group from IMCS asked our instructors regarding the fees we would pay, however, we were told that everything would be gratis. Instead, we bought a presenter and audio system for them. I was so grateful to see their Mom too who cooked sumptuous dinner and lunch for us. Thank you so much.

This weekend I spent my time doing my new found enjoyable activity. Though it was time consuming I felt the satisfaction after seeing the output. Why didn't I learn it long time ago?

Father's Day Celebration

I was a bit surprised or should I say deeply touched to receive a very appealing drawing from my six year old daughter Helena Beatrice on this very day. Thank you Helena.

We spent the day with activities such hearing a mass, dining at our favorite food chain, and watching the movie "8-legged animal."
